Garden arrach is also known as orach or orage and is an excellent cure for the throat. Alternative remedies for throat problems are hard to come by.
There is no need to describe (and its medicinal qualities) because it is so commonly known to every housewife it were but labor lost to describe it. It flowers and seeds from June to the end of August.
Throat problems are helped by arrach, which is under the government of the moon, in quality cold and moist like unto her. This is what aids such a natural remedy for the throat. It softens and loosens the body of a man, being eaten, and fortifies the expulsive faculty in him. Also an excellent throat cure. The herb, whether it be bruised and applied to the throat, or boiled, and in like manner applied, it matters not much, it is excellent good for swellings in the throat. The best way, I suppose, is to boil it and having drunk it inwardly, apply the herb outwardly. The infusion of it is, besides, an excellent remedy for yellow jaundice.
Arrach, a wild and stinking herbal cure for a bad throat.
Common arrach is also called vulvaria, from the part of the body upon which the operation is most. It is also known as dog's arrach, goat's arrach and stinking motherwort.
It has small and almost round leaves, yet a little pointed, and without dent or cut. It has a dusky, mealy color, growing on the slender stalks and branches that spread on the ground. It has small flowers in clusters, set with the leaves, and small seeds succeeding like the rest. It's an annual, perishing yearly, like most good herbal remedy herbs, and rises again by reseeding itself. It smells like rotten fish, or something worse. Its natural or preferred habitat is dunghills. It flowers in June and July and the seed is ripe quickly after.
Stinking arrach is used as a natural remedy to help women pained and almost strangled with the mother, by taking a sniff of it. Although inwardly there is no better remedy under the moon for that disease. I should also wax on its good effects for throat disease.
Arrach is a herb under the dominion of Venus and under the sign Scorpio. It is common upon almost every dunghill. The works of God are given freely to man, his medicines are common and cheap, and easy to be found. It is the medicines of the College of Physicians that are so dear and scarce to find. I commend it for a universal medicine and throat cure. It is beneficial for a medicine for the womb and such a medicine will easily, safely and speedily cure any disease thereof, as well as fits, dislocation and overheating of the womb. You can desire no good to your womb as this herb will affect it. And let me tell you this, and I will tell you the truth, heat of the womb is one of the greatest causes of a hard labor. Ensure you keep a syrup always by you.
